The relationship statement, and why its structure is not arbitrary

Each partner writes their own account of the relationship. Published guidance converges so tightly on how those accounts are organised that it looks like copying — until you line the structure up against the regulation, which is where it comes from.

Two statements, two voices

The couple's own statements are distinct from Form 888, which a third party completes about them. Here each partner gives their own account of the same relationship — commonly the applicant and the sponsoring partner, each writing separately, and in Australia these are commonly prepared as Commonwealth statutory declarations.

Where the structure comes from

Across seven independent practitioner sources reviewed, the described structure is the same: an opening, how the couple met, how the relationship developed, then the financial, household and social aspects and the nature of the commitment, then future plans.

That middle section is not a stylistic choice. Regulation 1.15A(3) for married applicants, and regulation 1.09A(3) for de facto applicants, list exactly four matters: the financial aspects of the relationship, the nature of the household, the social aspects, and the nature of the persons' commitment to each other. The statement structure is those four matters, wrapped in a beginning and an end.

How long they run

What published guidance describes as making one work

  • First person, in the writer's own natural voice, rather than a formal or corporate register.
  • Specific and concrete: named places, named institutions, actual dates, particular incidents — rather than general statements about the relationship.
  • Factual as well as personal. Sources describe the practical detail — who pays which bill, who does what at home, which friends know — as doing work that declarations of feeling do not.
  • Consistent with everything else in the application. The most repeated warning across sources is dates and facts that do not match between the two statements, or between a statement and the supporting documents.
  • Covering periods of separation and how contact was maintained, rather than passing over them.
  • Ending with future plans, which several sources describe as a commonly omitted section.

One source's phrasing captures the tone the others describe at more length: you do not have to be Shakespeare, you just have to be honest.

Patterns commonly described as problems

  • One person drafting both statements, or blocks of text copied between them.
  • Dates or facts that conflict — between the two statements, or with the documents.
  • Generic language about the relationship with no concrete detail behind it.
  • Leaving out future plans entirely.
  • Covering the romance and skipping the financial, household and social practicalities that the regulation names.
  • Passing over something an unfamiliar reader would notice — a long period apart, a short relationship, a large age gap, family opposition — rather than explaining the circumstances factually.
  • Obvious carelessness in proofreading.

A note on writing them with software

Published guidance repeatedly describes statements that read as templated or generated as noticeable, and describes the value of the document as coming from its specificity to one couple. That applies whatever tool is used to produce it. Mate Visa's own statement tool is built on that constraint: it asks questions and assembles what each person answers, and never writes content on their behalf.

常见问题

How long should a partner visa relationship statement be?
No published departmental figure was found in any source reviewed. Practitioner guidance converges on a range — roughly 1,000 to 2,000 words, or three to six pages depending on the source — while describing a single page as thin and twenty-plus pages as counterproductive.
Do both partners write a statement?
Published guidance consistently describes each partner writing their own account of the same relationship, and describes near-identical wording between the two as noticeable.
What should a relationship statement cover?
The conventional structure across published sources is an opening, how the couple met, how the relationship developed, the four matters named in regulations 1.15A(3) and 1.09A(3) — financial aspects, the nature of the household, social aspects, and the nature of the commitment — and future plans.
Is a relationship statement the same as Form 888?
No. Form 888 is completed by a third party describing what they have observed of the couple. The relationship statement is each partner's own account.
